Enfield P58 2 Band Cavalry Carbine (Rare Bengal Mounted Police Variant)

This here is a fine example of an Enfield Cavalry Carbine rifle.

Used by the British Empire the quality comes as no surprise. As with all their weapons from this era, the rifle is strongly built and still in a fantastic condition.
This particular model is quite a rare one indeed and was actually used as a carbine rifle by the Bengal mounted police in British India.

The rifle is a 2 band and uses the percussion lock system as was common before cartridge based guns were largely introduced in the following decades.

The P58 was used by the British Empire from December 1858 and also proved quite popular with the Confederates during the American Civil War.

This rifle in particular was manufactured in 1860, as is clearly stamped with the stamping of ‘TOWER’ under the date. TOWER refers to the manufacturer and means that this rifle would have either been made in Birmingham or London by a contractor for the British Empire.

Overall the condition is great with only a few signs of age to be seen. The wood is for the most part fully intact, though the odd scuff, crack and dent can be seen throughout. The lock mechanism is still functioning and the cleaning rod is present under the barrel. Besides the expected signs of age, the metal parts of the gun both brass and barrel are in a fairly decent state, with the stamping on the panel being nice and clear. The right side of the butt stamped with a very faint Government roundel and a Maharaja’s armoury stamp.

Truly an absolute treasure and rare collection piece that would look great on display or in a cabinet!
